23.10: Siberian day

The morning of the 23th Octobre was looking not special: very few capture and no really interesting birds until 10:00. At this time it was a small surprise in a bag... A Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita) with very few green and only a little yellow tinged on the border of the under-wing covers. All criteria was for a Siberian-type bird (Phylloscopus collybita tristis/fulvecens). After taken all mesurement, I was explaining to the other that It could be practicle to heard the call to really determined the type and during the picture time it call ("sfuiiit") several time for the pleasure of everybody to heard the difference with the more european birds ("huîît"). You can heard the typical cal of this birds on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDEIdkQ_7ic). It is the second capture for the camp after one in 2007 and maybe for Romania. The next round Istvan bring me another "putativ" interesting subspecie of a Lesser Whitethroat (Sylvia curruca) with some atypic criteria for a pure ssp. curruca (the third captures for this year). Few hours later during a round time a small bird fly off less then 1m of me in one of the meadow of the forest: it was clearly a "Locustella" (because of the tail-type and of the fly), but with a strange detail for "normal" Locustella: the tail was dark and contrast clearly with the rump... I see where it land... but impossible to refound it... I return to the camp one conviction: I saw a Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler (Locustella certhiola). Arrived to the camp I open the book and it was no more doubt. Everybody returned with me to the spot where I saw it, but nothing... Istvan and Christophe which were searching more south, called me and said me that they found a very very putativ female Eastern Stonechat (Saxicola 'torquatus' maurus/stejnegeri). After some minutes of observation we had done some very good observation of this bird (unstreaked pale rump, whitish throat, pale plumage, ...). It was no more doubt that we were observing the First Eastern Stonechat (Saxicola 'torquatus' maurus/stejnegeri) for Romania! About 2 hours later Christophe came to the camp with it... in his hand... WOW! To finish this amazing day during the last round we caught a strange female "Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella)" with very very little yellow tinged which it could be an hybrid between this specie and the Pine Bunting (Emberiza leucocephalos): comments of specialist are welcome.

wind, rain, cold here is the automn

Since the 30.9 the weather stays mostly windy, rainy and cold... Which perturbated the birdcatching works!

Depuis le 30.9 le temps reste maussade avec du vent, de la pluie et du froid... Ce qui ralentit les opérations de captures!
